Private Robert Hair

Private Robert Hair, 9th ( Service ) Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. He was killed in action in France on 28th August 1916 during the Battle of the Somme and is buried in Caterpillar Valley cemetery, Longueval, Somme, France. He was the son of George and Betty Hair of 9 Bridgend, Duns and had served his apprenticeship at the Cammo Foundry in Duns. He was working in Markinch, Fife when he  enlisted in Markinch, Fife. The photographs show Scottish troops on the Somme and the colour image shows a peaceful Somme landscape today with “no gas, no barbed wire, no guns firing now”.
