Sergeant Harry Learmonth

Sergeant Harry Learmonth, 1st Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action at Gallipoli, aged 31, on 22nd August 1915 and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey. He was born in Hawick and was the son of William and Agnes Learmonth of Cumledge Mills, Duns and the husband of Rachel Learmonth of Gourlay’s Wynd, Duns.  He had enlisted ( underage) as a Regular Soldier in 1899 and served in the Second Anglo-Boer War, India, Burma and Aden. On the Outbreak of War the Battalion left India and returned to England before landing on Gallipoli on the 25th April 1915.  He fell in the action around Scimitar Hill at Suvla Bay where the Battalion, although not part of the main attack, suffered  casualties of 1 Officer and 25 Other Ranks. 1st K.O.S.B. was part of the 29th Division which was a Regular Army formation.
