Private Charles Waite

Private Charles Walter Waite, 12th ( Service ) Battalion, Royal Scots.  He died from wounds, aged 29, in the 8th Casualty Clearing Station, Bailleul, France on the 12th March 1916. He had been born in Duns in 1886 and was the son of Alexander and the late Elizabeth Waite of Market Square, Duns. He had been employed as a carter in Ontario, Canada but was living in Dunbar when he enlisted in April 1915. He is buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord, France. At that time the Battalion were in the Ploegsteert Wood sector of the front and suffered a few casualties from shelling and sniping. ( His brother James also fell – see below ).
