Private David Burnett

Private David Burnett, 7th/8th ( Service ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in France on 9th April 1917 on the first day of  the Battle of Arras, aged 26. He had been born in Duns and was the son of James Burnett of 27 North Street, Duns and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Arras, France. He fell in the successful assault on the “Brown Line” towards Monchy which was the German front line. Casualties were 5 Officers and 120 Other Ranks killed and wounded. 16 artillery pieces were taken and many prisoners captured. ( His brother William also fell, see above ). The photos show troops during the Battle. The photograph shows one of the artillery pieces captured by the Battalion that day. After the War it was put on display in front of  Hawick museum.
