Private Alexander Martin

Private Alexander Hamilton Martin, 1st/4th ( Border) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died of disease on Active Service, aged 23, at Gallipolli on 21st November 1915. He had been born in Dublin and was the son of John Martin of Charlemont Place, Dublin and is buried in Redoubt Cemetery Helles, Gallipolli, Turkey. He was employed as a baker in Duns and boarded in Easter Street, Duns. He had emigrated to Canada but had returned home to enlist in December 1914. He had been wounded during the ” Charge” on the 12th July and recovered in hospital in Alexandria before returning to the Peninsula. ( the author’s great uncle was also wounded during the ” Charge” and also spent time in hospital in Alexandria before returning to his comrades ).
