Private Andrew Turnbull

Private Andrew Turnbull, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died in Palestine on 14th November 1917, aged 19, of wounds received in action and is buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel. He was the son of Mrs Ellen Law of New Blainslie, Lauder, Berwickshire. He was wounded in the successful attack on the Turkish positions at El Mughar. Casualties were high and the Battalion lost 9 Officers and 31 Other Ranks killed with 9 Officers and 138 Other Ranks wounded. Some hundreds of Turks and several artillery pieces were captured. Before enlisting in the Territorials shortly after War was declared he had been employed as a farmworker at Effledge farm near Cavers, Hawick. The photographs show Borderers at Ramleh in late 1917. The three soldiers are Alec Lawrie, Willie Cockburn and Jim Murray all of whom played football for Coldstream F.C.
