Rifleman Robert Hunter

Rifleman Robert How Hunter, 21st Battalion ( Yeoman Rifles ), Kings Royal Rifle Corps. He was killed in action during the Battle of the Somme on 17th September 1916 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Thiepval, Somme, France. He fell during the Battle of Flers Courcelette which resulted in the capture of both German strongpoints. This was the first time tanks had been used in battle and they helped the troops in their advance although they were still very slow and mechanically unreliable. The photos show troops during the battle and an early tank. The colour image is part of the peaceful Somme landscape today with ” no guns , no barbed wire, no guns firing now”.
