Private Joseph Patterson M.M.

Private Joseph Patterson, M.M., 9th ( Service ) Battalion, Cameronians ( Scottish Rifles ). He died in France on 15th April 1917 of wounds received during the Battle of Arras, aged 30. He was the fourth son of  George and Isabella Patterson of Branxton, Cornhill-on-Tweed and is buried in Aubigny Communal Cemetery Extension, France. 9th Cameronians was in 28th Brigade of the 9th ( Scottish ) Division. His father had a builders business in the village of Branxton and Joseph had been employed there. He had fought in the Battles of Loos and the Somme and had just been awarded the Military Medal for gallantry at Arras days before he was mortally wounded. His Headstone is inscribed ” Nobly He Lived Bravely He Died That We might Live “. The photographs show troops during the Battle. The colour photo shows the impressive Memorial raised to the Division’s part in the Battle. It stands near the Pointe de Jour Military Cemetery near Arras.
