Corporal William Tait

Corporal William Tait  2nd  Reconnaissance Corps (6th Battalion, The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment) Royal Armoured Corps. He died of wounds in Burma on 3rd June 1944, aged 30. He was the son of Colin and Jessie Tait of Lennel Home Farm and the husband of Dorothy Tait of Duns and is buried in Kohima War Cemetery, Kohima India. He fell during the hard fought Battle of Kohima in which the Japanese attempted invasion of India was smashed. His wife worked for the Town Council in Duns and before the War he had worked for Messrs Meikle & McDougall, grocers of Market Square, Coldstream. In his youth he had been a keen member of the 1st Coldstream Boys Brigade Company. His Headstone is inscribed ” And The Gentle Tweed And The Green Silent Pastures Yet Remain”.
