Private Thomas Tocher

Private Thomas Tocher, 1st/9th ( Territorial ) Battalion ,Highland Light Infantry ( the Glasgow Highlanders ) He was killed in action, aged 21, on 13th April 1918 in stemming the German advance near Neuve Eglise during the German Spring Offensive on the River Lys and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial Belgium. During the period the Battalion suffered 300 casualties with 71 being killed in action. He had been born in Coldstream and was the son of Henry and Elizabeth Tocher and the brother of Queenie Brims of Coldstream. He was also the uncle of Elizabeth Williams (nee Brims ) who lives in Coldstream.  He had originally enlisted in the Lothian and Borders Horse before being transferred to the Royal Scots and hence to the H.L.I. The photographs show Allied troops in makeshift defences preparing to resist the German advances.
