Gunner John Whitelaw

Gunner John Whitelaw, 174th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. He died from wounds, aged 29, on 29th September 1918 during the “Advance to Victory “and is buried in Tincourt New British Cemetery, France. He had been born in Gordon and was the son of Mrs I. W. Johnston of Nortonhall, Newtown St Boswells and before enlisting was a member of the Berwickshire Police Force stationed in Coldstream. The R.G.A. used the 9.2 inch howitzer in order to demolish enemy strong points and entrenchments by the method of plunging shellfire. The colour image shows such a gun on display in the Imperial War Museum. Other photographs show the advancing Allied troops during the final 100 days of the War.
