Corporal John Whitehead

Corporal John Anderson Whitehead  ( possibly ) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots. He died of wounds in Bulgaria  ( Salonica Front ) on 1st October 1916 aged 23. He had been born in North Berwick and was the son of Anthony and the late Margaret Whitehead of 27 Melbourne Place, North Berwick and is buried in Struma Military Cemetery, Greece. He fell in the  successful attack on the village of Karajakoi Zir  in the Struma Valley which was left in British hands. The Pipers led the Royal Scots into action. His Headstone is inscribed ” He Died For His Country. Sadly Missed At Home, North Berwick”. In August 1914 as a Regular soldier he was serving with the 1st R.S. in India at Allahabad. They returned ti England in November 1914 going to France in December. In December 1915 the Battalion was moved to the Salonica Front.
