Private Archibald Matthew

Private Archibald Matthew, 12th  ( Service ) Battalion, Royal Scots He was killed in action on the third day of the German March Offensive on 24th March 1918 aged 20. He had been born in Coldstream and was the son of Peter and Agnes Matthew of Masons Cottage ,Coldstream and is buried in Combles Communal Cemetery Extension, France. The Battalion was holding a line near Meaulte and caused the advancing Germans heavy casualties before retiring with the rest of the 9th ( Scottish ) Division to a fall back position. The photographs show Allied troops in defensive positions preparing to resist the advancing Germans.
