Assistant Surgeon Andrew Porteous

Assistant Surgeon Andrew Mather Porteous, M.D., H.M. 18th Regiment of Foot. He died on service at Colaba, Bombay on 16th April 1859, aged 23 and was buried there under a stone erected by his brother Officers The Regiment served in India from 1857 till 1866 and saw action in the Indian Mutiny, 1857-1859. In 1881 under the Childers reforms the Regiment became the Royal Irish Regiment. He was the son of the Reverend James Porteous and Margaret Robison of Coldstream. The Rev. Porteous served 29 years of his Ministry in the town and his family headstone stands in the old part of Lennel Churcyard.
