Paymaster Lieutenant Andrew McQueen

Paymaster Lieutenant Andrew Mcqueen, Royal Naval Reserve. He was lost at sea on Service on 26th April 1919 aged 26. He had been born in Edinburgh and was the son of Andrew and Isabella McQueen of High Street, Coldstream and is buried in the Ostend New Communal Cemetery.  He was employed as a bank clerk with the Bank of Scotland in Glasgow when he enlisted in February 1915. His ship was the Royal Fleet Auxiliary  “Hughli”  a salvage tug of 514 tons under the command of Lieutenant Peter Cosgrave R.N.R and which was engaged in carrying naval stores from Ostend to Dover. The ship was caught in a violent storm off Middelkerke and sank with the loss of 29 lives. There were only 11 survivors. His Headstone is inscribed ” Beloved Son Of Andrew And Isabella McQueen, Coldstream”.
