Lieutenant Alexander McDougal

Lieutenant Alexander McDougal, 10th/11th ( Service ) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. He died from wounds in France on 20th February 1918 aged 27 and is buried in St Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France. He had been born in Coldstream and was the son of John and Mary McDougal of “Leet Villa”, Coldstream who ran a grocery store in the Market Square, Coldstream. ( Meikle and McDougal ). In October 1914 he had enlisted in the Royal Engineers and from there he was  commissioned into the Highland Light Infantry in May 1915. He had seen much action including the Battle of the Somme in 1916. At school he was a good rugby player and played in the wing three quarter position. As a player with Kelso Rugby Football Club he was in the winning Seven at the Langholm Sevens of 1914. He was also a keen motorist. He was wounded at Cambrai on the 8th February 1918 and died in the 3rd Red Cross Hospital in Rouen.
