Private John Nairn

Private John Murray Nairn, “B” Coy., 5th ( Service ) Battalion, Cameron Highlanders. ( The memorial states Cameronians ) He was killed in action on 18th October 1916  during the Battle of the Somme, aged 32 and was the brother of William Nairn listed above. He is buried in Warlencourt British Cemetery, Somme, France where his headstone is inscribed ” He Shall Be Held In Everlasting Remembrance “. The photos show the state of the ground after the autumn rains had turned the battlefield into a glutinous quagmire making all movement very difficult. The colour photo shows part of the Somme battlefield today with” no gas, no barbed, wire no guns firing now”.
