Private Robert Rutherford

Private Robert Rutherford, 13th ( Service ) Battalion, Royal Scots. He was killed in action in France, aged 23, on the 1st August 1918. He had been born in Cockburnspath and was the son of Peter and Isabella of Red Row, Cockburnspath.His Headstone is inscribed ” No Man Hath Greater Love Than This”. He had been employed as a ploughman at Bushelhill Farm, Cockburnspath when he enlisted in December 1914. He was wounded in May 1916 and upon recovery re-joined the Battalion in October 1916. He is buried in Raperie British, Cemetery, Villemontoire, France. He fell in a joint attack with the 9th Royal Scots and the French on the German positions near Villemontoire.  Unfortunately the artillery barrage was ragged and the French never left their positions. The 9th Royal Scots suffered dreadful casualties of nearly 80 % of the Battalion strength. while the 13th R.S. suffered only 19 casualties and destroyed 4 machine gun emplacements.
