Sergeant Pilot Andrew Evans

Sergeant Pilot Andrew Harold Sargent Evans, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was killed in a flying accident whilst with Coastal Command on 19th February 1941, aged 24. He had been born in Adelaide was the son of Mary and the late Harold Evans of Adelaide, South Australia and is buried in Cockburnspath Parish Churchyard. At that time his mother was living in Akieside Cottage, Cove, Cockburnspath. ( She had lost her husband on the Western Front in 1918 during the Great War ). His Headstone is inscribed ”  God Will Bind The Broken Chain Closer When We Meet Again. Mother “. He and his mother had moved to England and he joined Vauxhall Motors in Luton and he had joined the R.A.F.V.R. in 1938. He had been wounded in action in October 1940 and on recovery he was posted to 3 ( Coastal) Operational Training Unit based at R.A.F. Chivenor in Devon. He was fatally injured when his Bristol Beaufort crashed near the airfield and died in hospital next day. ( The Beaufort was a twin engined medium torpedo bomber ).
