Private Stewart Craig

Private Stewart Craig,  11th ( Service ) Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was killed in action in France, aged 23, on 27th September 1915 during the Battle of Loos and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Dud Corner, Loos, France. He had been born in Chirnside and was the son of the late William and Isabella Craig. After the death of his parents he lived with his sister at Naismith’s Buildings, Chirnside. 11th Argylls were part of the 15th ( Scottish ) Division. When being relieved at Loos, Private Craig ,who was in the machine gun section, volunteered to go back to recover a missing bag containing parts of the gun but was not seen again. Before the war he had worked at Chirnside mill and had enlisted in October 1914. The gun used was the Vickers Mk.1 water cooled gun and was used in both defensive and offensive roles. The photograph shows the village of Loos after its capture and the artist’s illustration depicts a Battalion attack led by their pipers.
