Major Kenneth McKeachie

Major Kenneth Alfred Alexander McKeachie, Kings Own Scottish Borderers attached to the 3rd Battalion, Nigeria Regiment, Royal West Africa Frontier Force. He died from wounds on 11th March 1945 in Burma, aged 28. He had been born in Chirnside and was the son of the Rev. Alfred and Mrs Sybella McKeachie and the husband of Joan McKeachie of  Cambuslang. ( His father was the Minister in Chirnside Kirk ).He is buried in Taukkyan Cemetery, Burma where his Headstone is inscribed ” Lovingly He Lived-Bravely He Died Fighting For God And Right And Liberty”. Before enlisting he had been in the banking business having worked in St. Boswells, Dunbar and Kinghorn. He was commissioned in September 1939 and was posted to 1st K.O.S.B in France before being evacuated from Dunkirk. He volunteered for the Nigeria Regiment and saw service in East Africa and Abyssinia against the Italians. After further Service in Nigeria he was deployed to Burma to serve with the 14th Army in December 1944 and was fatally wounded in combat with the retreating Japanese forces during the Battle of Akyab.
