Captain John Elliot

Captain John Elliot, 4th Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action whilst Second in Command of “B” Coy on 24th January 1945 in the assault on the German village of Heinsing aged 34. He had been born in Chirnside and was the son of William and Janet Elliot of Ruthven, Coldstream and the husband of Mairi Elliot of Edinburgh and is buried in Sittart War Cemetery, Holland. He was born in 1911 and was educated at Watsons College, Edinburgh after which he was employed by Chirnside paper mill. He was a keen member of Berwick Rugby Club and Chirnside Tennis Club and had enlisted in the Territorial K.O.S.B. in 1939 rapidly rising to the Rank of Sergeant. in 1940 he was gazetted 2nd  Lieutenant  and Captain in 1942. At his death he was the Battalion Adjutant. Adam Elliot his brother was a Pilot Officer in the Royal Air Force.  The photographs show the Borderers in Germany in 1945.
