Lieutenant James Kincaid

Lieutenant James Brown Kincaid, 13th ( Service ) Battalion, Royal Scots He was killed in action on 23rd April 1917 near Guemappe during the Battle of Arras, aged 27 and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.  He was the son of Robert and the late Jane Kincaid of Hatton House, Chirnside. He had attended the Berwickshire High School, Duns before going up to Edinburgh University and graduating M.A. with Honours in English in 1911 and gaining a Blue in Athletics. From 1907 till 1914 he was a member of the 6th Battalion Royal Scots, Territorial Force. Before the war he had taught English at Kirkwall Burgh School on Orkney and as a Territorial he had been commissioned into the Royal Scots on the outbreak of War. He went to France in October 1915. He is also commemorated on the Memorial Tablet placed in the new Berwickshire High School, Duns.  The Battalion attacked near the village of Monchy supported by an ineffective artillery and found the German defences intact.  Resistance was murderous and despite desperate heroics  the remnants numbering 100 had to withdraw.
