Second Lieutenant Andrew Kincaid

Second Lieutenant Andrew Duncan Kincaid, 8th ( Service ) Battalion, Black Watch.  He was wounded and missing presumed killed in France, aged 19, on 22nd March 1918 during the second day of the German March Offensive at Equancourt near Cambrai, France and is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial. He was born in 1898 in Berwick-upon-Tweed and was educated at the Berwickshire High School, Duns before going up to Edinburgh University where he studied Medicine 1915-1916. He had joined the University O.T.C.  where he was an Officer Cadet from October 1915 till January 1917. He was commissioned in April 1917 and went to France on August of that year. ( 8th Black Watch were part of 9th ( Scottish ) Division).  Between 22nd and 29th March  the Battalion made a fighting retreat to Flesseles. Casualties were heavy with 1 Officer and 30 Other Ranks killed and 7 Officers and 136 Other Ranks wounded.  In addition 4 Officers and 271 Other Ranks were posted missing. ( Fortunately many of the missing proved to be Prisoners of War.  He is also commemorated on the Memorial Tablet placed in the new Berwickshire High School, Duns.
