Private Ralph Lyall

Private Ralph Lyall, 1st Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in France on 28th January 1917 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Thiepval, Somme, France. At that time the Battalion were holding frontline trenches in the Le Transloy sector of the Somme area and in two days suffered 50 Other Rank casualties by shellfire. He was the son of Mrs Lyall of High Cocklaw, Berwick and had been a Regular Soldier for several years serving in India. Before joining the Army he had been employed as a riveter with the Atlas Works in Springburn, Glasgow. He had already taken part in the Gallipoli Campaign before the Battalion was transferred to France to take part in the Somme Battles.
