Bombardier John Ainslie

Bombardier John Ainslie, 128th Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.  He was killed in Flanders on 26th June 1917 aged 30. He was the son of the late William and Elizabeth Ainslie of Cornhill-on-Tweed and is buried in Dikebusch New Military Cemetery Extension, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium. He was married to Catherine Ainslie of 5 Birch Street, Newcastle and had lived at Branxton Buildings, Branxton where before the War he had been employed as a general labourer. His Battery used the 60 pounder gun which fired large high explosive shells and which were normally used in counter battery work and in destroying enemy strongpoints, dumps and railways behind enemy lines.
