Private James Porteous

Private James Porteous, 1st/7th ( Territorial ) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in Belgium on 27th March 1916, aged 20 and is buried in Railway Dugouts Burial Ground, Ypres, Belgium He was the son of John and Jessie Porteous of West Weetwood, Wooler, Northumberland. He had enlisted at Alnwick was killed along with three of his comrades when a shell landed in their trench. Before the War he had been employed as a horseman and general farm worker and at some stage he had attended Crookham school. His Headstone is inscribed ” Thy Will Be Done “. The Battalion was part of the 50th ( Northumbrian ) Division and after the War an impressive Memorial was raised in Commemoration. It was erected near the village of Wieltje in the Ypres Salient where on the 26th April 1915 the Division had fought its first action of the War only days after landing on the Continent.
