Lance Corporal Benjamin Harper

Lance Corporal Benjamin Harper, Queen’s Own Worcestershire Hussars ( Worcester Yeomanry ) He died in Egypt  on the 5th November 1917 aged 46, of wounds suffered in action in Palestine. He had been born in Herefordshire in 1872 and was the son of John and Mary Harper of Droitwich. He was the husband of Annie Harper of Fernhill Heath, Worcestershire and is buried in Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt where his Headstone is inscribed ” He Died That We Might Live”. He had been employed as a servant at Bentley Hall, Worcestershire by the Mrs Maude Cheape. He enlisted in the son’s squadron of the Imperial Yeomanry to take part in the South African War. The son was Captain Hugh Cheape. ( see the entry above for Lt. Co. Hugh Annesley Gray-Cheape ). In 1911 he was working at Bothendene Stables, Bowden and in 1914 he enlisted again to serve as batman to Lt. Col. Gray-Cheape. He landed with the 1/1st Warwickshire Yeomanry in Egypt in April 1915 This Unit was attached to the Worcester Yeomanry.
