Private William Heatley

Private William Douglas Heatley, 16th ( Canadian Scottish ) Battalion, Canadian Infantry.  He was killed in action in France on 15th August 1917, aged 34, during the battle for Hill 70 and is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. He was the son of Thomas and Isabel Heatley of Hobkirk. He had emigrated to Canada in 1911. The Battalion was organized on 2nd September 1914 and served in the 3rd Brigade of the first Canadian Division. It was initially commanded by Lieutenant General Sir Arthur Currie who later rose to command the Canadian Corps and masterminded success at Vimy Ridge and Amiens. Whilst in England he was chosen as one of twelve to represent Canada in a special Guard of Honour at the Lord Mayor’s show in London.
