Private John Burnett

Private John Burnett, 7th ( Service ) Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. He was killed in action in France on 12th October 1916, aged 27, during the Battle of the Somme and is buried in Warlencourt British Cemetery, nr. Bapaume, Somme, France. He had been born at Roberton, Roxburghshire in 1889 and was the son of James and Agnes Burnett of Forkins, Bonchester Bridge. The Battalion had been raised as part of the “New Army” at Fort George in August 1914 and went to France in May 1915. They saw action at the Battle of Loos and the capture of Longueval on the Somme and many other actions. The photos show scenes from the Battle and the colour image shows a peaceful Somme landscape today with ” no gas, no barbed wire, no guns firing now”
