Private Alexander Ponton

Private Alexander Ponton 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died on 14th October 1916  of T.B. in Templehall, Bonchester Bridge aged 30.  He was the son of George and Susan Ponton of  Templehall, Hobkirk  and is remembered in the United Kingdom  Book of Remembrance. This book commemorates the casualties who were not formerly  recorded by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission who are continuing to investigate the grave location details. ( He was buried in Hobkirk Parish Churchyard although the grave is no longer identifiable ). Before enlisting he was a rural postboy and then an under-gamekeeper and rabbit catcher. He joined the Battalion but was transferred to the Provisional Battalion in May 1915. Six months later he was discharged from the Army on medical grounds. There is now a plan to give him a proper C.W.G.C. headstone.
