Sergeant Leslie Swanston

Sergeant Leslie Seton Dewar Swanston, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was a Navigator with 57 Squadron R.A.F.and was lost on an Air Operation over occupied Europe on 15th February 1944, aged 20. He was the son of Robert and Constance Swanston of Tweedmouth and is buried in Blokzil General Cemetery. The Squadron was part of the Main Force Bomber Group and at that time flew the Avro Lancaster from R.A.F. East Kirkby, Lincolnshire. On the night of 15th February 57 Squadron was part of the Force attacking Berlin and having bombed successfully was homebound to East Kirkby when it crashed at Blokzjil in Holland. All the crew perished and are buried together in the little Blokzjil cemetery.
