Private William Hay

Private William Hay, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in France on 17th September 1918, aged 31 during the ” Advance to Victory and is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial. He had been born in Berwick and was the son of William and Catherine Hay of 18 Church Street, Berwick and the husband of Agnes Shiel Nesbitt ( formerly Hay ) of 16 Church Street, Berwick. He fell in the close quarter fighting for the control of the German positions in and around the village of Moeuvres. The photographs show Allied troops advancing against the retreating German Army during the last 100 days of the War.
