Gunner William Ewart

Gunner William Ewart, 93rd Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. He died of wounds in Belgium, aged 21, on 30th May 1917 received during the Battle of Arras and is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery.  His Headstone is inscribed ” Lord Bless And Pity Us Shine On Us With Thy Face”.  He was the son of Joseph and Annie Ewart of Bowsden, Berwick-on-Tweed, Northumberland. Before enlisting he had been employed as a farm servant at Letham Shank, Tweedmouth. The R.G.A. used the 9.2 inch howitzer to destroy enemy strongpoints and trench systems with its plunging fire. They also used the 60 pounder gun and the illustration shows one with its new camouflage.
