Private William Leiper

Private William Thompson Leiper, 13th ( Service ) Battalion, Royal Scots. He was killed in action in France on 4th September 1916, aged 19, during the Battle of the Somme. He was the son of Elizabeth Leiper of 17 Kiln Hill, Tweedmouth and is buried in Adanac Military Cemetery, Miraumont, Somme, France. The photographs show Scots troops on the Somme.. The autumnal rains turned this ground into a glutinous quagmire and men guns and machines moved only with great difficulty. The colour image shows a peaceful Somme landscape today.
