Private Thomas Faragher

Private Thomas Faragher, 7th/8th ( Service ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in France on 9th April 1917, aged 43, on the first day of the Battle of Arras. He had been born in Laxey, Isle of Man and had enlisted at the Depot in Berwick. He  was the husband of Annie Faragher of 10 Wilton Path, Hawick and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Arras, France. He had been a resident in Golden Square, Berwick and had worked in the malt house.  Not only did he leave a widow he also left nine children. The Battalion was part of the second wave of attackers just south of the Scarpe, and after mopping up the village of Feuchy the final day’s objectives were reached and consolidated on the ” Brown Line “. According to the Battalion History this signal victory cost 5 Officers and 120 Other Ranks and 16 artillery pieces were captured.  The final photo shows one of the captured guns which was displayed in front of Hawick museum after the War.
