Private Robert H. Stokoe, 2nd/5th ( Territorial ) Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment. He was killed in action in Belgium on 27th November 1917, aged 21, during the Battle of Third Ypres. He was the son of Thomas Stokoe of 66 Shielfield Terrace, Tweedmouth and is buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Zonnebeke, Flanders, Belgium. his brother James also fell ( see above ). The photograph gives an idea of the atrocious conditions of the Battlefield. The heavy artillery barrages had shattered the fragile Flanders drainage systems and heavy rainfall had compounded the problem.
