Private Richard King

Private Richard King, 15th ( Service ) Battalion, Royal Scots. He died in a Casualty Clearing Station in Belgium on 25th April 1918, aged 25, of wounds suffered in action during the German Spring Offensives on the River Lys. He was the husband of Peterina King of 7 Parliament Close, Tweedmouth and is buried in Lijssenhoek Military Cemetery, Flanders, Belgium.  His Headstone is inscribed ” Until The Day Dawns And The Shadows Flee Away “. The Battalion at that time was in the thick of the fighting near Armentieres  and suffered heavily in preventing the enemy from breaking through. He was a native of Bo’ness, West Lothian and had been wounded by shellfire whilst helping to dig a trench. ( The Berwickshire Advertiser has his rank as Lance Corporal and the photograph does seem to show a single stripe ). The photographs show British troops in rather makeshift defences awaiting further German advances.
