Lance Corporal Norman Elliot

Lance Corporal Norman Elliot, 1st/9th ( Highland ) Battalion, Royal Scots ( The Dandy Ninth ). He died in France on 12th October, 1918 during the “Advance to Victory” and is buried in the Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe, France. He had been born in Tweedmouth, lived in the Town and had enlisted in Berwick. The 9th Royal Scots were part of the 154th Brigade in the 51st ( Highland ) Division and the photograph shows the Divisional Memorial raised in commemoration after the War. It was erected overlooking “Y” Ravine on the Somme which had been taken on 13th November 1916 when  the Division had successfully stormed and captured the very strong German positions at Beaumont Hamel. The photographs show Allied troops pressing forward after the retreating German Army during the last 100 days of the War.
