Gunner John Slee

Gunner John William Slee, 26th Brigade, Lowland Division, Royal Field Artillery, att 1st Trench Mortar Battery. He was killed in action in France on 30th July 1916, aged 20, during the Battle of the Somme. He was the son of Thomas and Isabella Slee of 12 Palace Green, Berwick and is buried in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, Somme, France. His Headstone is inscribed ” Rest In The Lord”. The Field Artillery normally used the 18 pounder field gun in an anti infantry role using both high explosive and shrapnel shells.  The example shell below is the shrapnel variety.
