Private John Oliver

Private John Oliver, 2nd Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in Belgium on 5th May 1915 during the Second Battle of Ypres and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium. He had been born in Berwick and had enlisted at the Depot in the Town. He fell in the almost impossible attempt to retake Hill 60 which  failed and cost the Battalion 6 Officers and 130 Other Ranks. The artist’s illustration depict a scene from the fighting.
