Private John Hush

Private John Hush, ” B” Coy. 1st Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action at Gallipoli on 4th June 1915, aged 36. He had been born in Berwick and was the husband of Margaret Hush of 108 Queensberry St., Dumfries and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey. He was a Regular and had already served in the Anglo-Boer War. He fell in the Third Battle of Krithia where despite a bombardment by the pre dreadnoughts ” Swiftsure” and ” Vengeance”  few gains were made and heavy casualties suffered in the attacks at Gully Ravine.  Although some slight gains were made the Battalion in particular had to contend with much uncut wire and heavy machine gun fire and heavy casualties resulted. The first photograph shows H.M.S. ” Vengeance” whilst the second shows the Battalion going over the top that morning.
