Private John Goodall

Private John Goodall, 1st Battalion, Scots Guards. He was killed in action in Belgium in the attack on Pilckem Ridge on 31st July 1917 on the first day of the Battle of Third Ypres. He was the son of Mrs Goodall of Saskatchewan, Canada and is commemorated on the Menin Gate, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium. He had been a police officer in Berwick before going to Canada to manage a homestead there.  in 1910 he had returned to Berwick and rejoined the police force before enlisting in 1914. He had already been wounded in January 1917. On 31st July the days objectives were captured with heavy casualties. 2 Officers and 55 Other Ranks were killed and 5 Officers and 207 Other Ranks were wounded.
