Sergeant John Davidson

Sergeant John Davidson, 7th/8th ( Service ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in Belgium on 18th August 1917, aged 38, during the Battle of Third Ypres and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, Flanders, Belgium. He was the son of Mary and the late Thomas Davidson of 53 South Bridge Street, Bathgate and the husband of Jane Davidson of 71 Low Greens, Berwick. At that time the Battalion were holding front line trenches between the Zonnebeke Road and “Frost Farm” and there were constant casualties through shellfire. The photograph shows the impressive Memorial raised to commemorate to the men of the 9th and 15th (Scottish) Divisions who fell during the Third Battle of Ypres. 7tht/8th K.O.S.B was part of the 15th Division. It was erected on Frezenberg Ridge near to the village of Zonnebeke in the Ypres Salient and unveiled in August 2007.and the plaque on the front has a quote inscribed from the Declaration of Arbroath
