Private John Burgon, 11th ( Service ) Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was killed in action in France on 27th September 1915, aged 26 on the third day of the Battle of Loos. He was the son of Henry and Ann Burgon of 67 Low Greens, Berwick and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Dud Corner, Loos, France. The photo shows Loos village after its capture and the artist’s illustration depicts a Battalion attack at Loos led by their pipers.
