Private James Henderson

Private James Henderson, 1st/4th ( Territorial ) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He died on Service in hospital on 30th June 1917 of wounds received in action during the Battle of the Somme in September 1916 and is buried in Berwick-upon-Tweed Cemetery. He had been born in Berwick was the fifth son of Mrs Henderson of East Street, Berwick. Before enlisting in September 1914 he had served his time with Messrs Caverhill and Co. as a blacksmith and had worked later at Amble. The  photograph shows the impressive Memorial raised to commemorate the 50th ( Northumbrian ) Division of which the Battalion was part until July 1918 when it was reduced to cadre and assigned to lines of communication duties. It was erected near the village of Weiltje in the Ypres Salient where nearby at St. Julien the Battalion had fought its first action of the War on 26th April 1915 only days after landing on the Continent.
