Seaman James Hattle

Seaman James Burgon Hattle, Royal Naval Reserve. He died in an accident aboard H.M.S. “Macedonia” on 1st July 1915, aged 32. He was the son of John and Isabella Hattle of 11 Low Greens, Berwick and is buried in Stanley Cemetery, Falkland Islands. The ship was built by Harland and Wolff at Belfast in 1903 for the P.and O. Line In August 1914 she was requisitioned by the Admiralty as an Armed Merchant Cruiser and was based at the Falkland Islands to patrol the surrounding seas. On 8th December 1914 in company with H.M.S. “Bristol”, a Light Cruiser, she captured and then sank two German colliers after taking their crews prisoner.
