Lance Corporal James Cockburn

Lance Corporal James Cockburn, 2nd Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in France on 30th July 1916, aged 39, during the Battle of the Somme. He had been born in Berwick and was the son of Margaret and the late Peter Cockburn and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Thiepval, Somme, France. He had lived at Foul Ford and before the War he was employed as a painter and decorator. He fell in the confused fighting near Delville Wood which gained little and cost the Battalion dearly with 14 Officers and 244 Other Rank casualties. The photos show Delville Wood after the Battle.
