Private Jack Keir

Private Jack William Keir, 15th ( Service ) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. He was killed in action in Belgium on 15th July 1917, aged 19. He was the son of Mrs Keir of Church Street, Berwick and is commemorated on the Nieuport Memorial, Belgium. Before being called up he had been employed as a reporter with the ” Berwick Journal “. Initially he was posted to the K.O.S.B. before being transferred to the H.L.I. He had been born in Berwick of a Regular soldier father who had been killed in the second Anglo Boer War. ( This Battalion was a “Pals ” Battalion and was known as the Glasgow Tramways  Battalion with many of its original members coming from the Glasgow Tramways Department ).
