Deck Hand Henry Morton, Royal Naval Reserve. He was lost at sea aboard H. M. Trawler ” Gambri ” on 18th January 1918, aged 23. He was the son of Henry and Margaret Morton of 71 Low Greens, Berwick and is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. ” Gambri ” was a trawler of 274 tons hired by the Admiralty for use as a minesweeper. At 10.15 a.m. she sank after striking a mine three- quarters of a mile from the Royal Sovereign light vessel, off the Sussex coast with the loss of twenty one men including the Skipper Albert Sayers. The mines had been laid earlier by the German submarine UC-71.
